Google wants to improve the software experience of their Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. A little less than two months after the release of the new flagships, the company has rolled out a new update that adds some cool features to both devices, including free access to the company’s VPN service.

If you have a Pixel 7 or 7 Pro, the December update will actually give you access to Google One VPN at no extra cost. This feature is usually reserved for Google One subscribers (to have extra storage space on Google Drive).

To take advantage of this new feature, it’s very simple:

  • Make sure you have installed the December 5, 2022 update
  • The update tool is in the app Settingsthen in the section System and System update
  • Open the app Google One
  • If the app wants to offer you a Google One subscription, you can click no thanks
  • Go to the tab Welcome
  • Click on the tile vpn
  • Click OK
  • Flip the switch Use VPN to On and then allow the connection

A limited VPN

As Google explains very well in the Google One app, this VPN will simply allow you to hide your IP and protect yourself from potential hackers who would squat on the same wifi network as you. That’s all. Unlike many other VPN offerings, Google’s service does not allow you to bypass geo-restrictions or block ads and web cookies. The tool is therefore quite limited, offering only a few options to whitelist apps or add a quick access tile.

Google is aware of its reputation for protecting privacy and assures that it “will never use your VPN connection to track, collect or sell your online activity“, and explains that only “usage level” is attached to your username. The more curious can see the technical details provided by Google about the operation of its VPN.
