While the final of the queen fights is scheduled for this weekend in Sion, the animal rights association PETA came out of the woods this week. Through a press release, she calls for the abandonment of this “absurd and useless” tradition, which affects the well-being of Hérens cows, according to her. The association obviously emphasizes the risk of injury to the animals, “forced to fight until a winner is designated”.

According to PETA, humans exploit the natural behavior of Hérens cows for the sole purpose of entertainment. “Tradition does not justify cruelty to animals,” protests Ilana Bollag, quoted in the press release. She feels that queen fights should be “relegated to the history books”.

A position that annoys breeders. Interviewed by Rhône FM, Fabien Sauthier, president of the Swiss Federation for the breeding of the Hérens breed, felt that the members of PETA were “misinformed” about the love that breeders have for their queens. “Yes, we organize the fights, but the cows do what they want. They are almost part of the family”, thus illustrated Fabien Sauthier.
