ONE Championship comes to USA, Johnson vs Moraes 3 headline

ONE Championship will make its long-awaited debut in the United States in 2023 with a very interesting trilogy fight.

ONE flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson will headline ONE’s first event in the United States, taking on former champion Adriano Moraes for a third fight, the promotion announced Monday.

ONE on Prime Video 10 takes place May 5 at 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colorado, near Denver. The card will be released for free to Amazon Prime subscribers in the US and Canada.

“It’s a monumental day in ONE Championship history as we announce our US field debut in Colorado on Friday, May 5,” ONE President and CEO Chatri Sityodtong said in a statement.

“We are so grateful for the support of the State Athletic Commission and look forward to putting on an unforgettable show for our passionate fans in the United States and around the world.”

Johnson, 36, a former UFC flyweight champion, won the ONE flyweight (61 kg) title in August with a fourth-round knockout in his rematch with Moraes. The two first fought in April 2021. In that fight, Moraes knocked out Johnson with a knee in the second round.

Johnson is 4-1 since joining ONE in 2019 after several years in the UFC. He won the promotion’s flyweight grand prix in 2019 before fighting for the belt 18 months later.

Moraes, a 34-year-old Brazilian, has been fighting for ONE for nearly a decade. He won the first flyweight title in 2014, then an interim belt in 2016 and the unified belt in 2017. He lost the title in a rematch with Geje Eustaquio in 2018, but defeated it in the trilogy six months later.
